Media personality MC Kats has spoken candidly about the challenges he faced after being diagnosed with HIV, revealing that the news cost him friendships and work opportunities.
Speaking during an interview with a local YouTuber, MC Kats said he shares his story to educate young people about HIV prevention and to fight the stigma surrounding the virus.
The television presenter admitted that, before his diagnosis, he never imagined he could contract HIV.
“I thought I was too cool to get HIV. I was working in the nightlife while I had TB but didn’t know I had HIV until my mum tricked me to go to hospital and get cough medicine. They finally told her I was sick and my immunity was low. That’s how I started ARVs,” he said.
'I Lost Friends and Gigs'
MC Kats revealed that some of the people he had helped over the years distanced themselves after learning of his HIV status.
He said the rejection left him battling depression while also losing work opportunities.
“I lost friends who I helped. I lost gigs,” he added.
Using His Story to Educate Others
Despite the painful experience, MC Kats says he has chosen to use his platform to raise awareness about HIV, encourage regular testing, reduce stigma, and promote prevention among young people.
