Uganda’s digital content industry has grown rapidly, with TikTokers and YouTubers now playing a major role in shaping online conversations and public opinion.

However, the rising influence of online creators has also come with challenges, particularly frequent clashes with the law under the Computer Misuse Act, as several content creators have faced arrest over cyber harassment and harmful content.

Singer Bebe Cool, who has previously been involved in legal disputes with online creators, has now revealed that the government is working on plans to license digital content creators across different platforms.

Speaking during a discussion on a local podcast, Bebe Cool said YouTubers and TikTokers will soon be required to obtain official licenses in order to operate legally in Uganda.

“I want to ask TikTokers and YouTubers to maintain respect and speak with facts, because in a short time the government will start issuing licenses for people to operate online. You will have to be very cautious with the law because if you don’t, your license will be taken away,” he said.

Bebe Cool believes that regulating online platforms will help reduce toxicity, misinformation, and cyber harassment, while promoting more responsible content creation.

The announcement has already sparked mixed reactions online, with many creators expressing concern about possible restrictions, while others welcome the move as a way to professionalize the industry.
