Singer-turned-politician Buken Ali, popularly known as Nubian Li, has officially been declared the Mayor-Elect of Nakawa Division, marking a major political victory for the National Unity Platform (NUP).
Nubian Li, a close associate of NUP president Bobi Wine, had been anxiously awaiting official confirmation following a prolonged and tense vote tallying process that sparked concern among his supporters.
After nearly two days of vote tallying at Makerere University Business School, Nubian Li was finally declared winner, defeating incumbent Paul Mugambe, who ran as an independent after losing the NUP party ticket.
His endorsement as the NUP flag bearer had earlier generated controversy, especially after Mugambe chose to break ranks and challenge him independently.
With his election now confirmed, residents of Nakawa Division are hopeful that Nubian Li will deliver on the promises he made during his campaigns and bring meaningful change to the area.
The win further strengthens NUP’s political grip in Kampala and adds another high-profile celebrity to Uganda’s growing list of artist-politicians.
