Comedian Madrat of the popular Madrat & Chiko duo has revealed that his limited education has cost him several opportunities, including his dream of joining politics.
Speaking in an interview with a local television station, Madrat said he has long wanted to contest for a political position but currently does not meet the required academic qualifications.
“I would have loved to contest for a political position, but I do not have the required education. I could go back to school if God wills, but also, just like they say, politics is a dirty game,” he said.
Madrat revealed that his education ended at Africana Whiteland College International, now known as Seroma Christian High School.
He explained that financial challenges at home made it difficult for his mother to consistently clear his school fees.
According to Madrat, students who failed to clear their balances were sometimes required to perform manual work for the school during holidays.
“I will not disclose the class I stopped at, but Henry Tigan is my witness that I attended school. He was above me. Us who didn't have enough money to pay school fees, we used to plead to study,” he said.
“My mother didn't have money, and we would study for the whole term, but if we failed to clear the balance, he would hold us and make us do work for him in the holidays,” he added.
Madrat said the demanding workload eventually forced him to abandon school completely, a decision he still regrets.
Despite missing out on formal education, the comedian has gone on to build a successful career in comedy alongside his longtime partner Chiko.
