Four bodyguards of National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Bobi Wine have been granted bail in the ongoing aggravated robbery case before the Masaka High Court.
The four—Edward Ssebuufu, alias Eddie Mutwe, Achileo Kivumbi, Gadafi Mugumya and Grace Wakabi, alias Smart—were each granted cash bail of Shs5 million, bringing the total cash bail to Shs20 million. Their sureties were also ordered to execute non-cash bonds of Shs50 million each.
However, NUP lawyer Samuel Muyizzi clarified that Eddie Mutwe and Achileo Kivumbi will not be released immediately despite the Masaka court granting them bail.
Muyizzi explained that the two remain in custody because they have a separate pending case before the High Court arising from an earlier bail denial at the Kanyanya Magistrates Court.
“Eddie Mutwe and Achileo Kivumbi cannot be released now. There will be a release order as far as this matter is concerned, but they remain in prison pending the hearing of their bail application for review of the bail that was denied in Kawempe, Kanyanya,” he said.
According to the defence team, the relevant files are already before the High Court, and Muyizzi expressed hope that the Masaka ruling could influence the outcome of the pending application.
“Those files are before the High Court, but we believe the reason behind this matter may persuade those of Kampala to follow suit,” he added.
The Masaka charges stem from an incident during the burial of businessman Pascal Ssekasamba in Lwengo District in May 2024. The accused face charges including aggravated robbery, malicious damage to property and assault, which they have denied.
For now, Mugumya and Wakabi are expected to be released once the bail conditions are fulfilled, while the legal team continues efforts to secure the release of Mutwe and Kivumbi in the separate case.
