Musician-turned-politician Bobi Wine, who built a successful music career spanning over fifteen years, believes the Ugandan music industry is now being controlled by government-aligned "mafias."
He continues to produce music even after his entry into active politics and his bid for the presidency.
In an interview with a local YouTuber, Bobi Wine explained that the government wants to control the industry's growth to prevent another artist like him from rising to prominence.
"The music industry has been taken over. It's now being controlled by mafias who are at the mercy of the government," he stated. "The government is afraid of the creatives and they try to control anything which comes out of a studio. They are afraid of bringing another Bobi Wine."
Bobi Wine believes that artists have a responsibility to create work that reflects society. He urged them to sing about social happenings and the injustices around them.
