Celebrated Ugandan musician Eddy Kenzo has opened up about his decision to reject offers from some of the world’s biggest recording companies, including Sony Music and Universal Music Group.

Kenzo, one of Uganda’s most decorated artists — with accolades such as the BET Award and multiple Grammy nominations — was recently questioned about why he has never signed with any major international label despite his global success.

In response, the Big Talent boss explained that he turned down the deals because major labels restrict artists and operate like prisons.

“Most of the artists signed to those major labels are like prisoners. Labels like Sony Music, Universal, and others reached out to me, but I turned them down. I just can’t live with the pressure that comes with being signed by a record label,” he said.

Kenzo argued that major labels are often driven by profit and put their own financial interests above the welfare and creativity of the artist.

He also pointed out examples of artists who he believes were negatively affected by such contracts.

“Musicians like Tekno never benefitted even after signing with Sony Music and Universal. He instead lost a music career,” Kenzo added.

Kenzo maintains that independence has given him the freedom to make decisions without pressure, allowing him to build his career on his own terms.
