The President of Burundi, Pierre Nkurunziza has died.

According to a government statement, Nkurunziza died of a heart attack at just 55 years. 

The President was admitted to hospital on Saturday after feeling unwell, but his condition later improved.

However, the President had a cardiac arrest on Monday and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, leading to his final demise.

His party, the National Council for the Defense of Democracy–Forces for the Defense of Democracy recently won the Presidential election. 

Evariste Ndayishimiye the former secretary-general CNDD-FDD, was recently announced new President.
