A 20-year-old woman in Nwoya is in trouble for allegedly killing her own newborn baby. The suspect is Jackeline Apiyo, a resident of Pawatomeru Parish, Purongo Sub –County in Nwoya district who reportedly committed the offence on Saturday, July 11.

Apiyo who was eight months pregnant went to the bush, aborted the baby after drinking local herbs, and smashed its head using a stone before covering the dead body with leaves, Ben Okot, the Chairman of Purongo Sub –County in Nwoya district narrates.

Apiyo's relatives say they became suspicious when she returned home with no child and no pregnancy but she declined to respond to any of the queries raised by her family members.
They put her on pressure, prompting her to confess to killing the baby.

The suspect was taken to Purongo Health Centre III for post-abortion care since she was bleeding and feeling severe pain in her abdomen.

The Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson Jimmy Patrick Okema says that the body of the baby was retrieved from the bush and taken to Anaka Hospital Mortuary for post –mortem. The police are closely monitoring Apiyo who is likely to face charges of murder upon recovery.
