The joint security taskforce has reminded all political candidates to follow guidelines set by the electoral commission, security agencies and the health ministry during campaigns.

While addressing the media in Kampala on Monday, police spokesperson Fred Enanga said that they are going to put emphasis on timing, to ensure that all campaigns are conducted between 7am and 6pm and in accordance with the harmonized candidates’ programs.

“Therefore, any campaign activities outside these timings will attract enforcement action from the joint security task force. All candidates will be allowed to organize to hold meetings and campaigns in a regulated manner, preferably outdoors but with limited attendance of a maximum of 70 persons” Enanga said.

According to the police mouthpiece, the 70 people at each meeting must observe a social distance of at least 2 meters. He added that the guidelines have already been given to all police territorial commanders and that so far, the adherence has been good.

“We have been having joint inspections of the venues together with the returning officers, the COVID-19 task force members at the district together with the campaign agents. We are going to ensure that all campaigns or meeting venues are provided with the necessary hand-washing facilities, sanitizers and other SOPs from Ministry of Health to ensure that they are strictly followed” Enanga warned.

He advised candidates to desist from holding mass rallies and processions especially at some of the venues that have been identified.
