One person has been killed and five others injured after a residential building collapsed in Busia district.

All the affected are members of the same family including the minor who was killed.

The deceased has been identified as 7-year-old Willy Ouma. Those injured are William Sanya, Buluma Wejuli, one Aminah, and their mother Grace Taaka, all residents of Budibya village in Masinya Sub-county in Busia district.

It has been reported that Ouma was hit by falling blocks on Sunday afternoon killing him instantly after their residential house collapsed following heavy rains.

The rains blew off the rooftop of the house while the family was having lunch.

According to William Sande the head of family who was not home at the time of the incident, he received a call from neighbors informing him that they received heavy rains accompanied by a storm that blew off the rooftop of his house.

Neighbors say they saw the storm blowing off the rooftop of the victim’s house followed by the minor’s cry for help. However, by the time they arrived to help, the minor had already been covered in debris.

Vitalis Okuda, the Buhehe Sub-county LC V councilor attributed the accident to the poor workmanship used to construct the building.

7 families were left homeless by the same storm and local leaders are appealing for help from the relevant authorities and development partners.
