The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, has announced that General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the President of the Republic of Uganda, has fulfilled his constitutional obligations by assenting to the Anti-Homosexuality Act, as stated in Article 91 (3) (a) of the Constitution.
The recently passed bill, which criminalizes same-sex relationships, has been hailed by the Speaker as a response to the concerns expressed by the Ugandan population.
In her address, the Speaker emphasized the importance of safeguarding the sanctity of the family, in accordance with Article 31 of the Ugandan Constitution. She also highlighted the Parliament's commitment to protecting the nation's culture and the aspirations of its people, as outlined in objectives 19 and 24 of the national objectives and directive principles of state policy.
Expressing gratitude, she acknowledged the President for taking decisive action in the best interests of Uganda. She also commended her fellow Members of Parliament for their resilience in the face of pressure from detractors and conspiracy theorists, reaffirming their commitment to the nation's motto: "For God and our Country."
On behalf of the Parliament of Uganda, the Speaker extended her gratitude to the people of Uganda for their prayers and support throughout the execution of their responsibilities, as stipulated in Articles 1 and 79 of the Constitution. She vowed to consistently champion and advance the interests of the Ugandan populace.
Furthermore, the Speaker encouraged the responsible authorities to fulfill their duties as prescribed by the Anti-Homosexuality Act. She reminded them that the people of Uganda have made their voices heard, emphasizing the need for fair, resolute, and equitable enforcement of the law.
