Eighteen exceptional Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) personnel have successfully completed a year-long Taekwondo training programme at Kukkiwon, the World Taekwondo Headquarters, under the second cohort of the initiative. Their graduation ceremony took place at Onomo Hotel in Kampala.
Officiating at the event, the Joint Staff Training and Doctrine (TRADOC) representative, Brig Gen Wycliffe Keita, said the course equips soldiers not only with top-tier martial arts techniques but also with the values of discipline, respect, and resilience that lie at the core of the UPDF identity. He noted that the graduates now join a growing cadre of highly skilled Taekwondo practitioners who will help drive excellence across the force.
“You will play a key role in passing on your knowledge to fellow soldiers, strengthening the UPDF’s capabilities and contributing to our mandate of safeguarding the nation while supporting regional and international peace efforts,” Brig Gen Keita remarked.
He appreciated the foresight of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Commander-In-Chief, and the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for backing programmes that empower soldiers to advance professionally and achieve greater competence.
Brig Gen Keita also pointed to the Uganda–Korea cooperation as a powerful example of partnership rooted in mutual respect, acknowledging the Republic of Korea’s continued willingness to share its expertise to support UPDF development.
The Defence Attaché of the Republic of Korea to Uganda, Lt Col Kim Seha, said the steady progress of the programme demonstrates the professionalism and dedication of the UPDF and stands as a practical showcase of collaboration between the two nations.
He noted that defence ties grow stronger not only through high-level dialogue but also through practical initiatives such as this training, which promote discipline, readiness, and deeper understanding.
“The combined effort of the instructor and the trainees has elevated UPDF Taekwondo training into a major pillar of our defence cooperation,” Lt Col Seha stated. He expressed confidence that the discipline and endurance gained during the course will boost the soldiers’ effectiveness in their current duties and future assignments.
Kukkiwon-sent instructor Master Kwangjoo Kim congratulated the graduating soldiers and encouraged them to use their skills for the benefit of their country. He emphasized that achieving a black belt signifies more than technical mastery.
“You are now acknowledged as Taekwondo black belts. Holding this rank carries responsibility and reflects the true spirit of Taekwondo,” he said, urging them to uphold that honor and continue becoming stronger soldiers and responsible citizens.
The event was attended by both senior and junior officers from the Training Department.
