At least three Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) staff members died on Sunday evening, May 24, after the van they were travelling in reportedly collided with an elephant near Karuma.

Among the deceased was Robert Wamala, a Tax Education Officer at URA and former journalist with the now-defunct WBS Television.

According to reports, the accident happened about 10 kilometres from Karuma Bridge as the team travelled from the West Nile region towards Kampala.

Witness accounts indicate that after the vehicle struck the elephant, the animal allegedly reacted aggressively and further damaged the van, resulting in the deaths of the occupants.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement detailing the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

The tragic accident has shocked many colleagues, friends, and members of the media fraternity who remembered Wamala for his work both in journalism and public service.
