The Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court has ordered a vote recount in the closely contested Kalungu West parliamentary race, putting the victory of MP-elect Joseph Gonzaga Ssewungu under fresh scrutiny.

The ruling followed a petition by defeated candidate Ismael Ssemakula, who challenged the results that were declared by the Electoral Commission.

Chief Magistrate Herbert Asiimwe said the decision was guided by public interest and the narrow margin between the two candidates.

“Since this is a matter of public concern, and the difference between the candidates is very small, it is only proper that the votes be counted,” Asiimwe ruled.

Razor-Thin Margin

According to the Electoral Commission, Ssewungu polled 10,106 votes, while Ssemakula followed closely with 10,060 votes — a difference of just 46 votes.

  • Date: Friday, 23rd January

  • Time: 10:00 AM

  • Venue: Kalungu Chief Magistrate’s Court

The court invited all parties, their lawyers, and agents to witness the exercise, urging them to limit their numbers to avoid congestion.

Although Ssewungu initially opposed the recount through his lawyers, he later agreed to comply with the court order, maintaining that he remains the rightful winner.

“I am ready for the recount because I know I won fairly,” Ssewungu said.

The recount is expected to determine whether Ssewungu retains his seat or if the outcome of the race will change.
