Veteran Ugandan musician Lord Fred Sebatta says he is willing to collaborate with younger artists once Uganda's copyright system is fully implemented and effectively protects musicians' work.
Speaking about the country's copyright regime, Sebatta said discussions around copyright have gone on for years, but the focus should now shift to ensuring the law works in practice.
"There's been a lot said about copyright in Uganda, but we first have to make it work," Sebatta said.
The singer explained that, as the writer and performer of his own music, he deserves legal protection for his creative work, especially when collaborating with other artists.
"I wrote and sang my songs, so I should be able to protect them in case any artist asks for a collaboration," he said.
According to Sebatta, a transparent and effective copyright system would give musicians confidence that their work is protected, making collaborations between veteran and younger artists easier and more beneficial for the industry.
His remarks come as Uganda's music industry continues to push for stronger copyright enforcement to ensure artists earn from the use of their creative works.
