Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs and Democratic Party (DP) president, Norbert Mao, has hinted at a possible bid for the Speakership of Parliament ahead of the new parliamentary term set to begin in May this year.

Mao, who currently enjoys a working relationship with President Yoweri Museveni and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), revealed that he is consulting widely before making a final decision.

“Right now, I am carrying out consultations about the prospect of speakership, and we will also meet the leadership of NRM, including President Museveni, because they have the majority of MPs in Parliament,” Mao said on Tuesday.

The Justice Minister believes that if elected Speaker, he would strengthen Parliament, promote independent oversight, and ensure robust and competitive debates during plenary sessions.

Mao, however, faces an uphill task, as the current Speaker, Anita Annet Among, is widely reported to have already secured strong backing from the ruling party.

Political analysts say Mao’s entry into the race would add a new dynamic to the Speakership contest, especially given his cross-party links and growing influence within government circles.
