Musician and Bad Character Records boss Kalifah AgaNaga is demanding Shs550 million from fast-food company KFC over the alleged unauthorised use of his music in a social media advertisement.
Through his lawyers, Elgon Advocates, AgaNaga reportedly served KFC's Managing Director with a notice of copyright infringement, alleging that the company used his Nassanga Remix as background music in a promotional TikTok video without obtaining permission.
According to the legal notice, the alleged use of the song for commercial purposes amounts to copyright infringement under Section 46 of Uganda's Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act.
AgaNaga's lawyers are seeking damages, an account of profits and an injunction against further use of the music. They also allege that the use of the song infringed the singer's neighbouring rights as its producer and performer.
The legal team has demanded that KFC immediately remove the video from its social media platforms and stop using AgaNaga's music without authorisation.
The notice reportedly seeks Shs500 million in aggravated damages, citing alleged lost licensing revenue and damage to AgaNaga's brand, alongside Shs50 million in legal costs.
KFC has reportedly been given seven days to respond to the demands, with AgaNaga's lawyers warning that failure to reach a resolution could lead to formal legal proceedings.
At the time of publication, KFC had not publicly responded to the allegations.
