The man arrested in connection with the death of Afrigo Band leader Moses Matovu has given his account of the confrontation that left the veteran musician fatally injured in Kibuli.
The suspect, identified as Vincent Arnold Nsamba, was arrested in Nansana hours after Matovu died at Kibuli Hospital on September 24, 2026. Police have identified him as a prime suspect in the case.
According to Nsamba’s account, Matovu appeared “a bit drunk and weak” during the confrontation and fell near his vehicle.
“Matovu looked a bit drunk and weak, so his hand did not reach me, in the effort to save Tusiime,” Nsamba said, according to reports.
He claimed that Matovu staggered and fell to the ground during the incident.
“When he fell on the ground, maybe something hit him on the head because immediately, blood started gushing out of his head and I thought he had died,” he said.
Nsamba added that he panicked after seeing the blood and left the scene.
“Based on that, I quickly abandoned the scene and went to my home in Nansana to rest,” he said.
Police investigations indicate that Matovu had been in Kibuli early that morning with a woman identified as Rose Tusiime when they encountered Nsamba, who police said had previously been in a relationship with her. A physical confrontation followed, leaving Matovu seriously injured.
Earlier accounts had described the incident as an attack by unidentified assailants, but subsequent police investigations pointed to a confrontation involving Nsamba. Police later arrested him and continued investigating the circumstances surrounding Matovu’s death.
A recent reconstruction of the scene reportedly involved both Nsamba and Tusiime as detectives sought to establish the sequence of events that led to Matovu’s fatal injuries.
Matovu, 77, was a founding member and longtime leader of Afrigo Band, whose career in Uganda’s music industry spanned nearly six decades. Afrigo marked its 50th anniversary in 2025.
