Bishop Reuben Kisembo has urged the newly crowned Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I to remain committed to his wife, Rebecca Amonding Rukidi, and uphold the marital vows they made before God.
Speaking during the Omukama’s coronation celebrations, Bishop Kisembo reminded the new Tooro monarch that, as a Christian king, he should follow the biblical teaching of monogamy and remain faithful to his marriage.
The Bishop specifically advised Omukama Rukidi Nyabongo I to remain with one wife, while warning him about the challenges he believes can come with polygamy.
“One wife, one woman. That’s monogamy. That’s the biblical teaching. Since Your Majesty, you already made vows before God that you will love and stay with her for the rest of your lives, I pray that you will continue that line of thinking and belief,” he said.
Bishop Kisembo further urged the Omukama to lead by example by remaining faithful to the vows he made to Rebecca.
“But polygamy has challenges. Since you’re a Christian King, we pray for you to stick to the marital vows that you made. That’s my strong and humble advice to you, Your Majesty. You’re free to take it or leave it, but that’s my humble advice as the Church. May God lead you in this leadership,” he added.
The Bishop’s remarks came as the new Omukama began his reign following his coronation, with religious leaders, royal officials and other guests gathered to witness the historic ceremony.
