Only a fool steals from a prison. Trouble befell a 28-year-old man after he was caught allegedly stealing cotton from Koroto Prisons Farm in Dokolo District.
The unidentified man has been detained at Dokolo Central Police Station.
Mr Michael Abeja the officer in charge of Koroto Prison says the suspect, is a resident of Aruda Abiro village in Dokolo Town Council.
“I found him in the farm with sacks and a basin harvesting cotton but he took off on seeing me. Since I had already identified him, I reported him to police and he was arrested at his home where four sacks of cotton lint were recovered,” Mr Abeja said.
According to the officer in charge of Dokolo Central Police Station, Mr Johnson Oguta, the suspect will be charged with theft.
Dokolo District Police Commander, Mr Aminsi Kayondo Lukanga, advised people neighboring prison farms to be the custodians of government property.
Meanwhile,
Orom Tikao Prison Farm in Kitgum District is set to become the biggest cotton farm in the country.
The Commissioner General of Uganda Prisons, Dr. Johnson Byabashaija disclosed this while touring Orom Tikao Prison Farm in Orom Sub County on Tuesday.
In the last season, Prison authorities planted about acres of cotton. Byabashaija was amazed by the cotton plant, which are about three meters high. Orom Tikao Prison Farm seats in 2500 acres of land, which was donated by the community.
Mark Ogwang the Officer in-charge of the farm notes that the plantation is performing at a minimal due to the terrain and its location. The farm is covered by several trees that make the planting difficult.
"We would have planted much more than 50 acres of cotton but our biggest hindrance has been the thick bushes and trees that cover the farm land. Once we can maneuver past the thicket, we shall have much more cotton than all the prisoners in Kitgum can manage to work on," he said.
