Top comedian and Comedy Store director Alex Muhangi has spearheaded the formation of the Uganda National Comedians Federation, saying the move is meant to unite comedians and open doors to government financial support.
Speaking during an interview with a local TV station, Muhangi said comedians have for long been denied government funding because they lack a united structure.
“Bugingo (Hannington) is very busy to run the comedy industry. We need a federation to receive money from government. We shall register all comedians across the country,” Muhangi explained.
He also revealed that the government, through the President, is willing to support them once they are formally organized under one body.
“We also need to work with the President — we want that money from government,” he added.
Muhangi says he is inspired by the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF), which has successfully secured government funding and support for musicians in recent years.
With the new federation in the works, it looks like comedians are now ready to cash in just like their counterparts in the music industry. đźŽđź’°
