Renowned events emcee and media personality MC Kats has hinted at retiring from television after more than two decades on screen, saying the time has come to create space for younger talent.
Speaking to revelers at a Kampala night spot, the outspoken presenter revealed that he is considering stepping away from his television role to focus on building his personal media platforms. MC Kats, whose real name is Edwin Katamba, currently hosts the popular NBS After5 show.
The veteran presenter disclosed that he earns about USD 1,000 monthly at NBS TV but emphasized that money is not the driving factor behind his decision.
“I’m not doing this because of the pay or because I can’t do the job. I want to create space for others. If I don’t step aside, when will other people work on TV?” MC Kats said.
He was quick to clarify that his decision has nothing to do with burnout, pressure, or loss of relevance, but rather a personal choice to pass the torch to the next generation of broadcasters.
MC Kats’ media journey dates back to his teenage years. He joined WBS TV at the age of 13, where he hosted the popular Teens Club show. His talent quickly stood out, opening doors to bigger platforms in Uganda’s television industry.
He later made history as the first entertainment presenter on NTV, where he hosted NTV Xposed, before eventually moving to NBS TV, where he has remained a dominant force on After5.
With 23 years of uninterrupted service on Ugandan television, MC Kats believes his chapter on TV is nearing its natural end. He revealed that he hopes to officially exit television next year.
However, fans should not expect him to disappear from the media space entirely. MC Kats plans to become more active on his YouTube channel, MC Kats Talks, where he will host discussions on a wide range of topics.
“I have served this country for 23 years on TV. I feel it is enough,” he said, adding that his television seat is now open for someone else to shine.
