Musician Mark Da Urban has stirred debate in the local music industry after boldly claiming that Fik Gaza is not a true dancehall artist.
Speaking during a radio interview, the self-proclaimed “Dancehall Maradona” argued that many artists are wrongly labelled as dancehall simply because they use dancehall-inspired beats.
“Fik Gaza and dancehall are two different things. Mark Da Urban and dancehall are one and the same. Fik Gaza is good at what he does, but it is not dancehall,” Mark Da Urban said.
Drawing The Line
Mark explained that using a dancehall beat does not automatically make someone a dancehall artist.
To support his point, he referenced Feffe Bussi and his song “Iddi Amin Dada”, saying it carries a dancehall beat but remains rap music.
“Some people use dancehall beats and tell people they are singing dancehall, but when you really analyse their music, they are not.”
Debate Reignited
His comments have since sparked fresh debate among fans and artists over what truly defines dancehall in Uganda’s evolving music scene.
While Mark acknowledged Fik Gaza’s talent and success, he insisted the genre should be reserved for artists who fully embody its style and culture.
