Omukama-designate Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I has pledged to unite Tooro as he prepares for his coronation on Tuesday, September 29, following his selection as successor to the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Tooro Kingdom has released the final programme for the coronation, with activities set to begin on Monday night, September 28.
According to the programme released by the head of protocol, Dr Richard Rwabuhinga, Nyabongo I will leave Rwengoma Palace and trek to Karuziika Palace in a symbolic procession marking his takeover of the royal seat.
The king-designate is expected to undergo traditional rites at Karuziika throughout the night before Tuesday’s formal coronation.
Speaking about his background and preparation for leadership, Nyabongo I said he was raised to view his royal heritage as a responsibility rather than an entitlement.
“I was raised with a strong awareness of where I come from — the son of Prince Christopher Paul Kijanangoma and grandson of Omukama Sir George Rukidi III — and with an equally strong insistence that heritage must be matched by discipline and hard work,” he said.
“My family never let me treat royal descent as an entitlement; it was presented to me as a duty to prepare for.”
Nyabongo I also pointed to his professional experience outside the royal institution, saying he spent 24 years building a career in journalism and public communication.
“Alongside that upbringing, I spent 24 years building a career in journalism and public communication,” he added.
His coronation comes after the Babiito Royal Clan selected him on September 9, followed by endorsement by the Tooro Kingdom Supreme Council. The government has since affirmed the succession process and is processing the Gazette notice.
The coronation programme will include a church blessing at St John’s Cathedral before the royal ceremony at Karuziika Palace. President Yoweri Museveni is expected to attend as chief guest.
Nyabongo I is set to become the new Omukama at a time when the succession has generated disagreements within the royal family. His stated emphasis on unity is therefore expected to be an important part of his leadership message.
