Senior figures in the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) have criticised Office of the National Chairman (ONC) manager Hadijah Namyalo after her Bugisu team publicly endorsed President Yoweri Museveni for continued leadership beyond 2031.
The endorsement was made during World Tourism Day celebrations in Mbale on Sunday, September 27, where members of the ONC Bugisu team displayed banners backing Museveni as he addressed the gathering.
Chris Buyela, who represented the ONC Bugisu team and Namyalo, said the endorsement reflected their view of Museveni’s contribution to development and youth programmes.
The move has drawn criticism from PLU figures, whose organisation is currently running a nationwide endorsement campaign in support of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba for the 2031 presidential race. PLU launched its Sebei campaign on September 26 as part of the broader mobilisation drive.
PLU General Secretary Fadil Twalla directly addressed Namyalo on X, saying the organisation respects the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and had previously worked with it under the Tuko Pamoja arrangement.
Twalla, however, maintained that Gen. Muhoozi, who chairs PLU, will be on the ballot in 2031.
“I wish to state categorically that Gen. @mkainerugaba, our PLU Chairman, will be on the ballot in 2031, and that, according to him, the Father of the Nation, His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa, will be his chief campaigner.”
He then asked Namyalo to stop what he described as “unsanctioned” endorsement activities.
“I therefore request that you desist from provoking us and from confusing Ugandans with unsanctioned, attention seeking, ill-intentioned endorsement stunts,” Twalla wrote.
PLU has been collecting endorsements for Muhoozi across the country, with its own records showing support from political and public figures in recent weeks.
Daudi Kabanda, the head of the PLU Chairman’s Office, also joined the criticism with a brief message directed at Namyalo.
“Namyalo, please stop it,” Kabanda posted.
The latest disagreement highlights competing public endorsements around Uganda’s 2031 succession debate, with the ONC Bugisu team backing Museveni while PLU continues its campaign for Muhoozi.
