Deejay and media personality Etania has spoken out about what she describes as fake friendships in Uganda’s entertainment industry, saying some people build relationships mainly for fame, gigs and connections.
Speaking on Snapchat, Etania reflected on friendships she formed years ago that lasted more than eight years. She said those relationships were built on genuine investment, time spent together away from work and a mutual understanding of each other.
According to Etania, however, many friendships in the entertainment industry today have become transactional, with people associating based on what they can gain from one another.
“Lately, it's a lot of falling out because people don't like each other. They are just using one another, fake for fake, as they say. Social contracts because we are all female entertainers, let's roll together, deep down, you undermine each other,” she said.
Etania described herself as one of the most authentic and genuine people in the industry but said finding sincere friendships has become difficult because some people approach her because of her influence.
She also warned fellow entertainers to be cautious about the people they allow into their personal circles.
“It's so scary out there, guys. I tell you, you can't befriend anyone, you can't trust anyone. Even a normal person approaches you as a fan but turns on you. I have personally seen this with two girls in the past. Please be careful, stay prayed up, do your job, go home. The world is crazy,” she added.
Her comments highlight her concerns about the challenges of maintaining genuine friendships in an entertainment industry where professional connections and personal relationships often overlap.
