One person has died and scores of others injured as pilgrims struggled to access Namugongo Martyrs’ shrines this morning.


Eyewitnesses say an unidentified Ugandan woman in her 50s died of pressure after being pushed by crowds that were all trying to get inside the shrines before Mass.


Joseph Mugisa, Assistant Inspector General of Police who heads the police fire and rescue directorate says the woman died upon arrival at Kiruddu hospital in Makindye where she was rushed. 


Also, over 100 pilgrims who suffered different kinds of illnesses were rushed to the same hospital and were improving.


Today’s Liturgical celebration at the Namugongo Catholic Martyrs’ shrine was led by Kiyinda- Mityana Diocese with Rt. Rev. Anthony Zziwa as the main celebrant. It attracted at least a million people from across the world.
