Security operatives have intercepted five more M23 rebels in Kisoro District as they made way to the Democratic Republic of Congo. These have been identified as Sergeant Eric Murezeru and Captains Rogers Kumbwirana, Feresian Musabyimana, Hategeka Nyiroyonsanga, and Patrick Mugisa.
These were intercepted by police at Kanaba along Kabale-Kisoro road at around 1:30am on Saturday. According to the Kisoro District Police Commander Charles Okoto, M23 combatants were aboard a Horizon Bus.
Security was however tipped by other passengers on the bus after failing to recognize the language the rebels were using.
The Kisoro Resident District Commissioner, Hajji Shafique Ssekandi says the rebels are being held together with their colleagues at Kisoro Police Station as investigations continue. He says the fighters will be relocated to Bihanga Military Training School today.a
The rebels declined to speak to the media. On January 18th 2017, a combined team including the Uganda Police and Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF) intercepted 53 M23 rebels in Mbarara heading to DRC.
They were detained at Makenke Barracks near Mbarara town. The group was sent back to Bihanga Military Training school in Ibanda district on Sunday. The combatants are part of 270 former rebels who were confined at Bihanga Military Training School following their defeat by the DRC government forces in 2014, which pushed them into Uganda.
