Political campaigns have been banned in and outside Gulu main market. Market authorities say no form of political meeting shall be allowed at the market premises.
The decision comes after politicians made it a habit to hold their campaign rallies in front of the main market. According to the traders, several people were injured and items stolen during a campaign rally last month.
The Market Master Gulu main market Francis Megolonyo argues that they reached the decision to ban any political activity inside and outside the market considering that people who go to attend the rallies are a security threat to the vendors’ properties, while others intimidate security causing confrontations which in some cases result into teargas and other measures.
Megolonyo added that the decision follows several complaints and concerns raised by vendors who lost their goods and money to thieves posing as supporters of opposition candidates who either stage their campaigns at the parking lot of the main or passing by the facility which hosts over 1,000 vendors.
He added that hosting campaigns at the market also affects their revenue collections but also could lead to the spread of COVID-19 which will lead to closure of the market.
