Over 830 illegal drug shops closed by National Drug Authority in Northern Uganda

The National Drugs Authority (NDA) closed the drug shops including two pharmacies, 48 human and veterinary drug shops, and 16 clinics among others.

Over 830 drug outlets in the Northern Region have been closed for operating illegally. 

The National Drugs Authority (NDA) closed the drug shops including two pharmacies, 48 human and veterinary drug shops, and 16 clinics among others.  NDA has also recovered and impounded stolen medical equipment and government drugs worth 1.7 Billion Shillings during the two-week-long operation conducted in the Lango and Acholi Sub Regions.   

According to Samuel Kyomukama the NDA Head of Enforcement, the suspect is Dr. Alobo Gastone, a Gynecologist, and Lecturer at Lira University.   

Dr. Alobo who is being held at Lira Central Police Station was faulted for operating an illegal pharmacy but further investigation found him in possession of drugs labeled ‘’Government of Uganda’’.   

Others arrested include James Lubangakene and Christopher Odong Langoya from Kitgum Municipality. 

The two were arrested from Akfranc Medicine drug shop, which is privately owned by Robert Akena, the Pharmacy Technician at Kitgum General Hospital.
