President Yoweri Museveni has called on locals in his home district of Kiruhura and the neighboring Kazo to first improve household incomes to fight poverty before focusing on the bad road network.

The President and First Lady, Janet Kataaha Museveni on Wednesday met with farmers and leaders of the two districts at Nswerenkye Primary School in Kiruhura. One of the matters raised by the leaders was poor roads that are hindering the transportation of goods.

However, Museveni stated that good roads are not fundamental in improving livelihoods but the start is to create income-generating activities to alleviate poverty.

He explained that good roads have been constructed in several parts of Uganda for purposes of transportation of goods and services but end up being used to dry cassava and maize.

The President stated that he bought land in Kisozi, Gomba with a vision to create wealth despite the area having a poor road network.

“We shall work on all the roads but they should find stable families with improved household incomes. Tarmac roads will not take away poverty. Seek first homestead incomes, the rest will be added unto you,” Museveni said.

He further encouraged locals with small pieces of land to use them for poultry farming and zero grazing.

“When I go to heaven, I don’t want God to blame me for not getting you out of poverty. He will at least know that I did my part but you did not listen,” Museveni said.
