State Minister for Housing, Persis Namuganza, has officially thrown her hat into the ring for the powerful position of Speaker of the incoming 12th Parliament.
The outspoken and often controversial Member of Parliament for Bukono Constituency confirmed her bid last week, making it clear that her mission goes beyond just occupying the seat — she wants to clean up Parliament.
Speaking about her ambitions, Namuganza said she is focused on restoring the dignity of the legislature and steering Uganda towards a corruption-free Parliament.
“I have officially declared my candidacy for the Speaker of the 12th Parliament of Uganda. My mission is to restore the dignity of our House through transparency, objectivity, and a corruption-free legislature. I am ready to lead a Parliament that truly serves the people of Uganda,” Namuganza stated.
Sources within political circles allege that Namuganza is enjoying backing from former Speaker Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, who is reportedly at loggerheads with the current Speaker Anita Among.
Insiders further claim that Kadaga’s support could be strategic, especially given her long-standing political rivalry with Anita Among.
Namuganza, however, insists that her next major task is to convince the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the ruling NRM party to endorse her candidacy — a move that could dramatically reshape the leadership of Uganda’s Parliament.
With political tensions rising and power blocs already forming, the race for Speaker is shaping up to be one of the most dramatic battles in Uganda’s recent parliamentary history.
