President Yoweri Museveni has officially appointed renowned Ethiopian aviation executive Girma Wake as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of Uganda Airlines, in a major move aimed at stabilising the struggling national carrier.

The appointment was made through a directive dated 13th February 2026, addressed to the Minister of Works and Transport, Edward Katumba Wamala, following what the President described as serious leadership and management weaknesses at Uganda Airlines.

In the directive, Museveni instructed the minister to immediately formalise Girma Wake’s appointment as a Consultant and Advisor to help fix governance and operational gaps within the airline.

“I hereby direct that you go ahead and appoint Mr. Girma Wake as a Consultant/Advisor to assist in rectifying a number of management weaknesses in the airline,” Museveni wrote.

The President further directed that Wake serves as Acting CEO until July 2026, when a substantive Chief Executive Officer is expected to be appointed.

“In addition, he is to serve as Acting CEO until we appoint a new CEO by July, 2026,” Museveni stated, adding that Wake will work closely with the airline’s Board during the transition period.

Museveni also ordered the current CEO, Jenifer Bamuturaki, to step aside with immediate effect and hand over to Girma Wake.

“I also direct that the current Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Jenifer Bamuturaki be enabled to step aside immediately and hand over to Mr. Girma Wake and the Board of Uganda Airlines,” the letter read.

Girma Wake is widely respected in the aviation industry, having previously served as the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, one of Africa’s most successful carriers.

His appointment is being viewed as a strategic attempt by government to rescue Uganda Airlines from ongoing operational challenges and restore confidence in the national airline.
