New details have emerged about Christopher Okello Onyumu, the suspect behind the tragic killing of four toddlers at a daycare center in Ggaba, Kampala.
According to family members and local leaders, Onyumu reportedly had a history of mental illness and had previously been taken to the United States for treatment.
He is currently detained at Kabalagala Police Division following the shocking attack.
Disturbing Background Emerges
Investigators say the suspect returned to Uganda in November 2025 without the knowledge of his family, who had believed he was still abroad.
Local council leader Arnold Kasujja revealed that Onyumu’s father identified him through circulating images and informed police about his mental health struggles.
“They took him to the USA for treatment, and the family didn’t even know he had returned,” Kasujja said.
Additional accounts from taxi operators suggest the suspect had a troubled past, with claims he spoke about visiting a traditional healer who allegedly advised ritual sacrifice as a path to wealth.
Allegations of Past Violence
Authorities are also looking into unverified claims linking Onyumu to a 2017 incident involving the death of his stepbrother—an event that reportedly led the family to seek treatment for him abroad.
The Attack
Onyumu allegedly posed as a parent seeking admission before attacking children playing at the daycare, killing four toddlers in one of the most disturbing incidents in recent memory.
He was later rescued from an angry mob by a joint team of police and army officers.
Government Response
Following the tragedy, State Minister for Higher Education John Chrysestom Muyingo visited the scene and ordered the closure of the daycare and its sister institutions.
Authorities have pledged support to the affected families as investigations into the motive behind the attack continue.
The incident has left the nation in shock, raising urgent concerns about mental health awareness, community safety, and protection of children.
