The National Resistance Movement (NRM) caucus has endorsed outgoing Defence Minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth as the party flag bearer for the position of Speaker of Parliament.
Oboth-Oboth, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for West Budama Central, secured the endorsement during a caucus meeting held at State House Entebbe on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
The caucus also endorsed Ruhinda North MP Thomas Tayebwa for the position of Deputy Speaker. Tayebwa has served as Deputy Speaker in the 11th Parliament.
According to reports from the meeting, all the other 18 aspirants for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker positions stepped down in support of Oboth-Oboth and Tayebwa.
The endorsements place the two politicians in a strong position ahead of the official elections scheduled for Monday, May 25, 2026.
The 12th Parliament is expected to hold its first sitting at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, where Members of Parliament will elect both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
The development follows weeks of intense political mobilisation and internal discussions within the ruling party regarding leadership of the next Parliament.
