Four people have died and more than 10 others have been hospitalised in Lyantonde District after reportedly falling ill shortly after eating beef served at a burial ceremony in neighbouring Rakai District.

The victims are believed to have consumed meat from a bull that was slaughtered during the burial of a man identified only as Umar.

According to preliminary reports, several people who attended the burial later developed illness, with some requiring medical attention.

Three Victims Identified

Masaka Region Police spokesperson SP Twaha Kasirye confirmed the deaths and identified three of the victims.

They are Charles Bangirana, a resident of Kyakabiikwa Village, and Jennifer Ntejerize and Christmas Behekanira, both from Mudaala Village in Lwamaggwa Sub-county, Rakai District.

More than 10 other people are reportedly receiving treatment in hospital.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths and determine what caused the illness among those who consumed the meat.

The incident has left residents in the area concerned as investigations continue into the suspected food poisoning.
