A total of 36 people lost their lives in the four days of Christmas holiday (December 23-27) police have said.

Mr Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson, said more than 115 accidents were registered of which 36 were fatal (killing 36 people), 51 were severe and 28 were minor.

“Most of the accidents were a result of speeding, burst tyres and poor mechanical conditions of vehicles,” said Mr Enanga while speaking to the media at police headquarters at Naguru in Kampala yesterday.

Mr Enanga added that in the two weeks of the period before and immediately after Christmas, more than 146 accidents were registered in different districts, with 42 deaths recorded while 96 were seriously injured. Pedestrians accounted for the highest number of people killed, contributing to 41 per cent of the fatalities followed by passengers at 29 per cent and motor cyclists at 19 per cent.
