A growing political rivalry within the National Unity Platform is drawing national attention as incumbent Kampala Woman MP Shamim Malende faces an unexpected challenge from KCCA Speaker Zahara Luyirika for the 2026–2031 term.

The contest has sparked allegations of internal favoritism and raised concerns about the party’s cohesion heading into a critical election cycle.

The intensifying race has come with controversy. Some party loyalists have expressed concerns about perceived favoritism toward Zahara Luyirika, who is alleged to be the favorite among the party leaders.

Meanwhile, a section of foot soldiers pays allegiance to Shamim Malende, who has for years been in court securing their freedom whenever they are arrested.

These tensions risk deepening internal divisions at a time when the party seeks to project unity and strength ahead of the general elections taking place next year.

Kampala District has long been a strategic political stronghold. In the 2021 general elections, NUP clinched almost all the electoral positions, leaving a few for NRM and other opposition political parties.

The war between both camps is currently raging on social media as verbal attacks continue to take shape. The task, however, goes back to the party leaders to ensure smooth internal democracy without dividing its supporters.
