At the Uganda National Musicians Federation’s Ekyoto event, singer Fille Mutoni opened up about a deeply personal battle—her long struggle with drug addiction.
Speaking to a room full of fellow artists and industry members, Fille shared how substance abuse nearly destroyed every part of her life, especially her relationship with her daughter. At one point, she said, she could no longer even visit her child at school.
Her story began back in 2015, when, according to her ex-manager and father of her child, MC Kats, she was introduced to hard drugs like crystal meth and crack by a friend. What followed was years of pain—rehab stints, relapses, and the heavy toll addiction takes on both body and mind.
Fille admitted that denial was her biggest enemy. “I started doing drugs in 2015, but I kept performing until I couldn’t anymore,” she confessed. “Every time anyone told me I had a problem, I never accepted it. I always said I had it under control. But that denial only made things worse.”
Her turning point came when she finally admitted she needed help. After years of struggling, she was discharged from rehab last year and has since been living a sober life.
Now, Fille is using her story to encourage others. She reminded her peers that recovery only begins with acceptance. “A doctor cannot treat a person who has not yet accepted that they are sick,” she said. “Addiction is a chronic disease. Doctors can only help us after we admit we have a problem. That’s the first step to survival.”
