Police in Butaleja district have in custody three people for alleged child trafficking. The suspects are Sairuna Nabaje, a resident of Nabiganda Village in Kachonga Sub County, Christopher Kawu and Musa Wanande, both residents of Butaleja Town council.

The Bukedi Region Police Spokesperson, Sowali Kamulya, says the trio is wanted for attempting to traffic 6-year-old Simon Kyefefe, the grandson of Sairuna Nabaje.

Kamulya narrates that a broke Nabaje approached Kawu and Wanande in Butaleja town council looking for someone to buy the six-year-old, saying she didn't have money to look after him.

She reportedly claimed that the boy's mother, Maureen Nasali left for Kampala three years back leaving her in charge of the minor. Kamulya says Kawu and Wanande also approached another person only identified as Mugaga Muto and briefed him about the deal.

According to Kamulya, Mugaga turned down the offer, saying he didn't have money and instead offered to get them another buyer. Mugaga reported the matter to police leading to the arrest of the trio.

The suspects are currently in custody at Butaleja Central Police Station on child trafficking charges and are expected to appear in court anytime. We were unable to establish how much Nabaje was selling her grandson and what she expected the buyer to do with the minor.
