The news of Rajiv Ruparelia's untimely passing on Saturday morning, following a tragic car crash at the Busabala flyover, sent shockwaves across Uganda. As the Managing Director of the Ruparelia Foundation and a prominent figure within the Ruparelia Group, his death is deeply mourned not only by his family and close friends but by countless Ugandans who benefited from his philanthropic endeavors.
Beyond his leadership within the business empire, Rajiv was passionately committed to social development. Through the Ruparelia Foundation, he spearheaded numerous initiatives that significantly impacted various sectors of Ugandan society, demonstrating a deep sense of responsibility and goodwill towards the community.
Here's a look at some key areas where Rajiv Ruparelia, through the Ruparelia Foundation, made a significant difference:
Support to the Entertainment Industry
A significant area of the Foundation's work under Rajiv's guidance was the vibrant support for Uganda's entertainment industry. This included sponsoring major events and concerts, providing crucial financial backing that enabled artists to reach wider audiences and stage high-quality productions.
Notable sponsorships included the highly publicized Sheebah and Cindy battle at Kololo Airstrip in September 2023, Ronald Mayinja's 47th birthday concert at Serena Hotel, and Karole Kasita's "Chekecha" concert at UMA Showgrounds Lugogo in November 2023. The Foundation also extended its support to the comedy scene, sponsoring events like Madrat and Chiko's ten-year celebration at Sheraton Hotel in October last year. Much of this support was facilitated through Victoria University, an institution within the Ruparelia Group.
Support to the Education Sector
Education was another cornerstone of the Foundation's efforts. Rajiv was instrumental in making education more accessible, particularly for underprivileged children, through extensive bursary and scholarship programs nationwide.
These opportunities were primarily offered through the Group's educational institutions, including Kampala Parents School, Kampala International School Uganda, and Victoria University. Notably, the Foundation has consistently offered partial scholarships for ten students from each district of Uganda to study at Victoria University, a program that has been running for over five years. In the 2019/2020 academic year alone, Victoria University awarded a remarkable 1,100 scholarships, a testament to this commitment. The Foundation also notably sponsored the primary education of young music stars Fresh Kid and Felista at Kampala Parents School until they completed their studies there.
Support to the Sports Sector
Rajiv's passion also extended to the sports sector. Serving as the Patron of the Central Motorsport Club (CMC), he was a direct advocate for motorsport development in the country. Under his leadership, the Ruparelia Foundation sponsored various sporting events and supported athletes across disciplines beyond motorsport.
This included backing the Busoga Marathon, the Joseph Ruvuna Rezida football tournament, the Uganda Rugby Union’s goat racing event, and a kickboxing tournament involving Moses Golola, organized by the Uganda Kick Boxing Federation. The Foundation had also previously extended support to marathoner Stephen Kiprotich, a national sports icon.
Support to Orphanage Communities
The Foundation also demonstrated consistent compassion for vulnerable communities, particularly orphanages. Rajiv was known for his warm connection with different orphanage communities, especially in Kampala's less privileged areas.
During the challenging Covid-19 crisis, the Ruparelia Foundation initiated an annual tradition of celebrating Christmas with the less disadvantaged. This heartwarming initiative saw the distribution of over 5,000 Christmas hampers to various orphanages across the region, including the Eseza Foundation, Islamic Foundation, and Angel Center, among others. This tradition has been sustained over the years, bringing joy and relief to many.
Support to the Health Sector
Improving public health was another key focus area for the Foundation. Through its initiatives and partnerships, Rajiv was dedicated to improving the health and well-being of communities. This was achieved through social mobilization efforts often in collaboration with partners such as the Ministry of Health, Uganda Red Cross, and other charity organizations.
According to the Foundation's website, it contributes over Shs 200 million annually towards medical bills, hospital renovations, procurement of essential hospital equipment, and organizing free community health camps for the public.
Valued Connection with the Media
Rajiv also cultivated a strong and positive relationship with the media. He was a respected figure among different media houses, partly due to the significant advertising support provided by the Foundation and the larger Ruparelia Group. Estimates suggest the Group spends over Shs 300 million annually on advertising, generated through various events, business activities, and public relations campaigns, making him a valuable partner for the media industry.
A Lasting Legacy
Rajiv Ruparelia's sudden departure is a profound loss that will be felt across Uganda for years to come. He will be deeply missed, not least by the Ruparelia Foundation, which he served with dedication and vision. His commitment to philanthropy touched countless lives through support for education, health, sports, entertainment, and vulnerable communities. While the void left by his passing is significant, his legacy of generosity and community support through the Ruparelia Foundation stands as a lasting tribute to a life dedicated to making a positive impact.
