Kampala Capital City has a new Lord Mayor after two days of tense vote tallying, with Ronald Balimwezo of the National Unity Platform (NUP) officially declared winner.
According to the Electoral Commission, Balimwezo polled 141,220 votes, defeating seven other candidates, including long-serving city leader Erias Lukwago, who has held the office for 15 years.
The ruling NRM candidate, Moses Kizito Nsubuga, came second with 43,615 votes, while the incumbent, Lukwago of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), placed third with 41,915 votes.
“I Will Seek His Counsel”
Shortly after his victory was announced, Balimwezo pledged to unite the city and work with all leaders, including his former rival.
“I will knock on your door because you are experienced and you have done a lot for this city. I thank you for the great service you have offered to Kampala,” Balimwezo said, referring to Lukwago.
He also thanked the people of Kampala and his party leadership for the support that carried him to victory.
“I particularly thank our president Bobi Wine for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to represent the National Unity Platform,” he added.
NUP Dominates Lord Council Positions
The National Unity Platform also performed strongly in the Lord Council races across the city. Some of the elected councillors include:
James Mubiru – Rubaga Division
Mosh Sendi – Makindye Division
Shamim Nabassa – Kawempe South
Judith Nalukwago – Women Representative, Makindye
Umar Magala – Kawempe North
Balimwezo’s win signals a major political shift in Kampala’s leadership and sets the stage for a new chapter at City Hall.
