For nearly three years, singer Eddy Kenzo has been at the forefront of pushing for amendments to Uganda’s outdated copyright law.
The drive for reform was one of the reasons the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) was formed—to unite all associations and advocate for creatives’ rights.
However, despite years of effort, the amendment has not yet been passed, leaving musicians hopeful but frustrated.
Speaking in an interview with a local YouTuber, Kenzo—who also serves as the Presidential Advisor on Creatives—revealed that the government has now given the matter top priority.
“The copyright management system was approved. What remains is sensitisation for it to take effect. The copyright law will be handled as soon as the next parliament takes effect. The President and everyone else has given it priority,” he said.
Kenzo urged artistes to continue supporting President Museveni in the upcoming elections, emphasizing that the reforms will greatly benefit the entire music industry once enacted.
