Former Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi has urged young Ugandans to avoid having children before they are financially and emotionally prepared to raise them.
Speaking during an interview on a local television station, Nakiwala said bringing a child into the world is a major responsibility that should never be taken lightly or influenced by pressure from society.
She advised young people to first establish themselves and have a clear plan for how they will care for their children before starting a family.
"It is not advisable to give birth before you are prepared and have a clear plan for how you will provide for your child, feed them, and educate them. Giving birth is not a race or a competition. It is a choice, not an obligation," Nakiwala said.
According to the former minister, every child deserves parents who are capable of providing basic needs such as food, education and proper care.
Her remarks come at a time when many young Ugandans continue to face unemployment, rising living costs and financial hardship, making it increasingly difficult for young parents to support their families.
Nakiwala encouraged the youth to focus on personal growth, financial stability and responsible planning before taking on the lifelong responsibility of parenthood.
