US-based Ugandan singer Naira Ali has strongly criticized the Ugandan government and President Yoweri Museveni, accusing them of taking over the country’s music industry.
In a bold social media post, Naira Ali claimed that the Ugandan music scene can no longer stand independently because of what she described as government interference and control.
“Both the Rwanda and Uganda music industries were hijacked by their respective dictators. Though Rwanda’s is well-funded and super strategic, Uganda’s has been reduced to doing songs that praise the dictator (Tusudiya mugaaga),” she wrote.
The singer, who relocated to the United States for better opportunities, expressed disappointment in the current direction of Ugandan music, saying that creativity and authenticity have been replaced by politically motivated projects.
Her comments come at a time when several musicians have released songs praising President Museveni and his government ahead of the upcoming elections. Others, meanwhile, have composed campaign anthems for opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) — reflecting deep political divisions within the entertainment industry.
Naira Ali’s statement has since sparked online debate, with fans split between those who support her outspoken criticism and others who accuse her of being out of touch with Uganda’s current music realities.
