Students at Makerere University have gone to polls this morning to elect guild representatives amid warnings by Dean of Students, Cyriaco Kabagambe that action will be taken against those who resort to violence.
His remarks come hours after the police engaged in running battles with students last evening when the final rally turned into a fight, shortly after former presidential candidate Kizza Besigye sneaked into the university.
Voting started this morning at 8am, at the 30 polling stations with exception of the School of Public Health where the exercise kicked off at 7:30am. Students at the School of Public Health have a conference at Protea Hotel in Kampala later in the day.
Kabagambe explained that while the campaign process has from the start been successful, isolated acts of violence that were registered were steered by non-student actors who enter the university. He said the university has no control over them.

Ballot papers were supplied to the University by last evening. Kabagambe said that only students are expected to vote on presentation of their University Identity cards for continuing students and bio-data forms for first year students.
He added that unlike last year, the university has requested police and university security to supervise the elections.

Last year, an election tribunal probing the irregularity allegations in the College of Education and External Studies called for a re-election after finding out that many students had voted without meeting the requirements.
Kabagambe says that this year the university expects voter turn up to be between 10,000 and 15,000 students. By 7pm on Thursday, the university had not released the voters register.
