Police has recovered 18 bodies from the wreckage of a fuel tanker accident scene in Rubirizi district which happened on Sunday.

Last evening, a team of Police and Uganda People’s Defense Forces-UPDF rolled out to recover bodies and by Monday morning, 9 bodies had been recovered. 9 others were recovered in the course of the day.

Currently, the teams are working towards clearing the accident scene.

Hell broke loose on Sunday, when the fuel tanker burst in flames when it overturned at Kyambura Trading Centre after failing to negotiate a corner.  Martial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi Regional Police Spokesperson, says Police have suspended the search temporarily.

According to preliminary police reports, the fire that gutted the fuel tanker started from a charcoal stove lit by roadside vendors.

Police will now resort to DNA to identify the deceased, as only a few bodies have been identified so far and these include; Mugisha Baryamujura, Sulait Sula, Isaac Okello, Wilber Mulinde, Nyangoma and Kenema alias Mama Aminah among others.

However, the death toll is likely to shoot up when the search resumes.
