Uganda is set to host the  World Health Summit Regional Meeting 2020 from April 27-28 at Speke Resort Munyonyo. 

The Summit which is organized and Hosted by Makerere University in partnership with the Government of Uganda, is an extension of the World Health Summit, the World Health Summit Regional Meeting which is also held annually in different member countries of M8 Alliance. 

The first World Health Summit Regional Meeting was held in Singapore in 2013. Subsequent meetings have been held in São Paulo (2014), Kyoto (2015), Geneva (2016), Montreal (2017), Coimbra-Portugal (2018) and Kish Island –Iran (2019). Makerere University shall host the World Health Summit Regional Meeting in 2020.

The World Health Summit is the annual conference of the M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centers, Universities and National Academies. Through the Inter-Academy Partnership (IAP) for Health, it is organized in collaboration with all National Academies of Medicine and Science. 

The goals of the World Health Summit include: Bring together all stakeholders at the level of equals, establish a unique and sustainable high-level forum and network, help define the future of medicine, research and healthcare, find answers to major health challenges – both today and tomorrow and make global recommendations and set health agendas worldwide.

The theme of the 8th World Health Summit Regional Meeting in Kampala is “Africa’s journey towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals and Universal Health Coverage”. 
The interactions and discussions will revolve around six major themes including; The Health of the African Youth, advancing Technology for Health in Africa, Global Health Security, Non-Communicable Diseases, Inter-sectoral Action for Health and Universal Health Coverage.

According to Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe the Makerere University Vice Chancellor, hosting the two key international events in Kampala (World Health Summit Regional Meeting and the 7th German-African Healthcare Symposium) will come with innumerable advantages and spin-offs including; Great visibility for Makerere University and Uganda on the international scene, tourism boost with over 1000 foreign guests expected, professional, expert, and student networks shall be created, sharing knowledge and best practices. 
Other benefits are; Interaction of the Academia, civil society, Government and private sector to discuss global health topical issues that determine health and contribute strategic solutions, Uganda will show case key successes in research ,HealthCare, and the progress towards achieving the SDGS, Dissemination of Uganda’s scientific knowledge and influence on our National and Regional Health Policies, the outcomes of the summit shall help to align global health priorities with the SDGs can strengthen engagement governments, institutions and individuals especially if they align everything behind a planetary purpose.

This will be the first time ever this global event is hosted in Africa, and has been dubbed “Africa Regional World Health Summit” and it is the first time an African Ugandan takes over the Presidency of the M8 Alliance.
