Ugandans who have built near Lake Victoria and encroached on it, should vacate before water swallows them.
The warning was sounded by President Yoweri Museveni on Thursday morning when he made an abrupt stopover at Kitubulu, Katabi Toen Council on Entebbe road.
At this particular place, water is nearly cutting off the road and could interfere with traffic in the near future.
“The water levels for Lake Victoria now stand at 13.4 metres, one point less than the highest we have ever obtained (13.41 in May 1964). Encroachers on Lake Victoria land should vacate before they are swallowed” the President wrote on twitter.
Water levels have been rising since December and many people living on the shores of L. Victoria have been forced to leave as their homes have been cut off.
Fishing villages in Luzira, Ggaba and Mulungu among other landing sites have also been affected leaving many people homeless and pennyless.
This morning, the country woke up to bad news of R. Nyamwamba in Kasese bursting it's banks, leaving a good number of households affected. Also, R. Lamia from Mt. Rwenzori in Bundibugyo burst its banks in the wee hours of Thursday.
According to Irene Nakasiita the RedCross spokesperson, their teams are out conducting rapid assessments. “We can share details when we receive reports on numbers of families affected, the support they require and immediate needs” she said.
